Federer stunned by Gulbis in Rome

Tennis Betting Lines

04/27/2010 - Rome, Italy (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - World No. 1 superstar Roger Federer was toppled by talented Latvian Ernests Gulbis on Tuesday at the $2.97 million Italian Masters, the fourth of nine Masters events on the ATP World Tour this year.

The unseeded Gulbis dismissed the two-time Rome runner-up Federer 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 in a second-round affair on the red clay at Foro Italico.

The 21-year-old Latvian knocked off Federer in just over two hours by swatting eight aces and breaking the super Swiss' formidable serve four times. Federer settled for three breaks in the surprising setback.

Federer broke Gulbis, who was serving for the match at the time, to level the third set at 5-5. But the young Latvian broke right back and then held his serve to complete the upset.

The reigning Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open champion Federer is now 13-4 this year, with this marking his first tournament-opening loss of the season. Three of the losses have come in his last three events.

The 16-time major champion Federer, who reached Rome finals in 2003 and 2006, beat Gulbis in a quarterfinal in Qatar back in January.

Gulbis captured his first-ever ATP title in Delray Beach in February and is now a quality 15-4 in his last 19 matches.

Second-seeded Serbian star Novak Djokovic avoided a Day-3 upset by leveling France's Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third round in a mere 59 minutes.

The 2008 Rome champion Djokovic was last year's runner-up here to clay-court king Rafael Nadal, a four-time Rome titlist.

Another second-round result saw Romanian Victor Hanescu upend 16th-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

In a first-round matchup involving a seed, unseeded former top-ranked star Lleyton Hewitt ousted ninth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Additional opening-round wins came for Italian Simone Bolelli, Spaniards Nicolas Almagro and Feliciano Lopez, Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and Serb Viktor Troicki.
