Oakland, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Gio Gonzalez tossed seven solid innings and the
Oakland Athletics racked up 15 hits in an 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners
in the first of a two-game set.
Gonzalez (4-3) allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts, as the
A's ended a five-game skid.
Adam Rosales had three hits and a homer. Daric Barton finished 3-for-3 and was
just a home run short of the cycle.
Jose Lopez drove in three runs for the Mariners, who have dropped three
straight and five-of-six. Matt Tuiasosopo homered in the loss.
Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-4) remained winless after being knocked around for seven
runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. His
earned run average is now at 7.62. In his first three seasons, his ERA
finished below 4.00.
After Franklin Gutierrez walked with two outs in the first, stole second and
moved to third on Kurt Suzuki's throwing error, he scored on Lopez's single to
right.
But Kouzmanoff quickly gave the A's a one-run lead with a two-run, two-out
center-field blast in the bottom of the first. Rajai Davis then doubled in two
more runs in the second, and two batters later Barton plated another with a
sacrifice fly.
Oakland tacked on two more in third on Rosales' two-out, two run homer to
left, but Seattle countered with Tuiasosopo's round-tripper in the fourth, as
the ball hit off Gutierrez's glove in center field and bounced over the wall.
The teams traded runs in the sixth as Lopez added an RBI single for an 8-2
lead, while Suzuki followed suit with one down in the bottom of the frame. The
hit scored Barton, who tripled.
The Mariners put runners on first and second with no outs to start the eighth.
Brad Ziegler then replaced Jerry Blevins and allowed a Lopez RBI groundout to
make it 8-4. But Craig Breslow got Ken Griffey Jr. to ground out, ending the
frame.
Andrew Bailey retired the side in order in the ninth.
Game Notes
